A Personal Note

Politicians seem to follow a gamebook that requires them to attack each other continuously during the campaign season.  As a citizen of this great country and the State of Maryland, I am tired of the games!

My campaign will be operated the same way I plan to legislate, with an open mind, open heart and open (or Missing) door.  I talk only about the issues as that is what is most important to you.  I do not have the typical 'Politicians replies' for anything; I give honest answers straight from the heart.

Concerning the issues, I have formed my own opinions through careful thought and consideration.  Each issue listed below includes an explanation of how I came to form my opinion.  I invite you to read through the issue topics, invite me to your event or come to one of my events / fundraisers to discuss the issues in person.

I look forward to seeing you out on the campaign trail!

Education

It is important for our children to receive a solid and well rounded education.  It is time that Maryland becomes the leader in K-12 education.

1)    In my opinion we have reached a point in America that requires renewing the education of Civics in our schools.  An entire generation has passed through the doors of schools across Maryland knowing little about the history of America.  It is time that we re-introduce our students to our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution; our countries desire for freedom and the struggle to maintain it; and the words contained within the Bill of Rights.  An education without a Civics lesson plan is an introduction to disaster for our country.

2)    I will work to raise the graduation requirements for our students.  The focus will not be to ‘teach to the test’ here in Maryland.  I believe we need to concentrate our education efforts on a ‘Teach to Succeed’ program.

Teach to Succeed will encourage students to learn not only in the classroom, but at home and throughout the community.  Students will learn through communicating and participating in their communities whether just shopping at the local market or assisting with a community event.  Each student will learn directly how the classroom lessons actually apply within the community through a Community Guidance system.

A Community Guidance system means that grocery and retail stores, restaurants and public offices such as fire and police stations will be encouraged to display posters or worksheets that show students what classroom lessons may be in effect in each individual place in the community.  Students at every level of education (K-12) will be encouraged to speak with personnel at participating locations to ask questions and therefore broaden their understanding of the classroom lessons.

High School students will be encouraged to participate in apprenticeships with local businesses who offer to participate.  Participation by businesses will be voluntary but encouraged through the offering of tax breaks associated with the funding of a higher education fund for participating students.

Middle school children will be introduced to the program through in-school partnerships with local organizations and business people who will be encouraged to visit the schools.  This arrangement may be through career fairs, individual classroom lessons, auditorium presentations or other means.  The intention is to present the student with a variety of real world information while also driving a message that continuing education is the key to success.

With the community working together students will graduate from High School with a clearer understanding of what career path they would be interested in pursuing.  Some may choose college, but others may choose a trade school or in some cases they may choose to open their own business.

3)    I would support other educational programs such as the recently defeated BOAST program.  The BOAST program was introduced by Catholic and Jewish groups to the State Legislature who killed the proposal in committee.  This would be a wonderful program that would give local businesses a tax break in return for their participation in making it possible for students to have a private education.  I believe it deserves a second chance in the Maryland Legislature.

4)    Physical Education in Maryland from K-12 should be a priority.  I am working toward a program that would give school districts, parents and students an option to participate in standard physical education within the school program, or opt into an after-school education program.  The after school program would be required to meet or exceed the federal requirements for physical education.  One particular program I would recommend to be considered is the Maryland National Guard Counter Drug/Anti-Bully/Physical Education program.  Funding for after school programs are the responsibility of the parents, however the National Guard program is not a recruiting tool and is free to join.  School districts offering this option would save taxpayer dollars.  All students who participate would be required to fill the empty class time in the schedule with a civics or other academic class assisting in the further education of our students.

Slots In Maryland

I support slots in Maryland; it is time for this state to “get a piece of the pie”!

While I understand that gambling can be addictive, I believe that the greater good to the citizens of Maryland is served by permitting Slots in Maryland.

Surrounding states are raping dollars from Maryland by advertising in this state and drawing tourists out of Maryland.  Our own citizens travel to Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey and West Virginia to gamble with cash that should remain here in Maryland.

Our State legislature and Governor O’Malley, having passed the slots bill into law, are now arguing over where to place the slots machines.  The same people who were against Slots in Maryland before they were for them are now confused about where to place the machines!

It is time to clean out the confused people in Annapolis and replace them with common sense citizen leaders who will get things done!

Maryland has had and promotes gambling heavily.  The horse racing industry and the lottery system are both heavyweights in the gambling industry.  To restrict slot machines and other gambling across the state is a waste of time and money.  The Maryland legislature has passed the slots bill (after refusing to do so under Ehrlich), O’Malley signed it into law (even though he opposed it when Ehrlich was Governor) and now the legislature is having problems figuring out how to implement the slots law and distribute the machines.

I support placing the slot machines in Horse Tracks and other gambling establishments.  I would also support allowing one or two slot machines in non-family establishments such as bars and the construction of a few casinos in Maryland.

I DO NOT support placing slot machines in areas where young children may be present such as shopping malls, convenience stores, within 100 yards of family entertainment venues or schools / churches, and family restaurants.

Taxes

No one likes to pay taxes, but it is a necessary process that assists the Government to supply certain services to the general public.

I will work to lower taxes and prevent new taxes!

I support the collection of taxes to pay for only those services that the Government can show are beneficial to our citizens and are fiscally effective and responsible.  I look forward to working for the people of Maryland to create a truly transparent financial record of State funds and spending.

I believe that special interest groups and lobbyists can be eliminated from Annapolis!

If financial records of the State were to be placed in public view where the citizens had the opportunity to see where tax dollars are wasted, the money needed for ‘pork projects’, or distributed to special interest groups or lobbyist organizations would necessarily disappear from the budjet.  Once eliminating the need for tax dollars to be collected to cover these wasteful items, I believe taxes could easily be cut saving the individual citizen hundreds of dollars a year!

Gun Rights

I support the second amendment fully.  Repeatedly crime statistics show that most violent crimes occur at the hands of an individual who has an unregistered, illegally purchased weapon.  Law abiding citizens rarely commit violent crimes, hence the term, “law abiding”.  Passing legislation making Maryland a “right to carry” state will reduce crime.  I believe that there will be a significant reduction in violent crimes in Maryland once side arms are permitted to be carried legally in this state.

Common sense leads me to believe that a criminal is less likely to approach a person to attack or rob them if they know there is a chance they themselves could be shot.  It is commonly known that a home is less likely to be robbed when there is a sign placed in the front yard announcing that you have a monitored security system.  Now consider the same philosophy when it comes to having a weapon attached to your hip.

Current laws forbidding weapons on school property, in court rooms and other places should remain in effect.  While I do support the second amendment, I also believe that all legally purchased and owned firearms should be registered with local or state law enforcement officials.  In the event that an officer should enter a home for any reason (investigation of a crime, serving a warrant, etc) or should an officer make a traffic stop, he/she must be informed of any potential harm they may face when approaching the home or vehicle.

The Environment

The Chesapeake Bay watershed is wide reaching, but is greatly ignored and poorly protected outside of our State’s borders.  Having lived in upstate New York, I remember the “Chesapeake Bay Watershed” signs being erected and an associated educational process set up to detail the importance of protecting the Bay.  The general feeling back then still stands today.  Many people in the watershed area don’t really care about what happens to a Bay that is hundreds of miles downstream from them.

Maryland needs to protect the Bay by returning to a process of educating and forcing the enforcement of state and federal laws so that the Bay will be protected from this point forward.  We must also begin an extensive “Clean up the Bay” program.  I will work with environmental agencies and groups, community organizations, businesses and individuals to clean up and clean out our streams, rivers and creeks that feed our Bay.  I plan to work with organizations to set up a program to closely monitor waterways that feed the Bay from adjacent states.  We need to evaluate where the pollutants are coming from so that we can eliminate the problem at its source, once and for all.

Our reservoirs, rivers, streams and creeks within our state must also be monitored carefully.  An “Adopt a Waterway” program, similar to the “Adopt a Highway” program will be implemented or enhanced when my Maryland Environmental Makeover Bill is introduced.  We will all work together to keep the waterways free of debris and pollutants.

We cannot stop with there; we must also become more aware of the littering that is rampant all over the state.  Existing littering laws should be more strictly enforced.

I will work, along with other interested Maryland citizens to physically pick up the litter and clean up our state.

Foreign Policy

First, stop funding the United Nations, then the United States should leave the UN and evict them from the building that our tax dollars built for them.  Billions of our tax dollars are wasted on yearly UN dues to assist countries that hate us!  While I believe in helping our allies, it is a waste of our dollars and our soldiers lives to help countries who clearly have nothing but hate for the United States.

Our military should not be used as the UN Police Department.  It is time for our military to be available to defend the United States and our allies such as Israel, and not bend to the United Nations’ requests.

Our Nations’ borders must be defended against the intrusion of those who seek to harm our lives and livelihood.  Bring our troops home from the UN missions and allow them to defend our homeland.  Send our troops overseas to assist our allies when we are asked for help, not when the UN says we need to go.
